Joyce V. PJ's restaurant

$250K

Joyce was eating at PJ's Restaurant in El Sobrante when this extremely rare accident occurred.  As she was sitting, Joyce grabbed the seat of her chair to move it closer to the table, but did not realize that the front of the seat wasn't fully attached to the legs because the screws had fallen out.  Unbeknownst to her, the tip of her thumb lodged between her seat and the hollow metal tube that was part of the chair leg.  When she sat back down, the tip of her thumb was severed by the metal tube.  Although her doctor was able to re-attach the tip of her thumb through multiple surgeries, she continued to suffer pain and numbness.

This case settled for $250,000.
